Seven studio and one live album revealing Herbie's storied career!
VMP Anthology: The Story of Herbie Hancock is eight albums / 11LPs that tell the story of the acclaimed American keyboardist, bandleader, composer, actor, and promoter of jazz fusion, funk and electro music. Included in the set is a link to an exclusive star-studded podcast and deluxe liner notes in the included booklet.
Hancock's best-known compositions include the jazz standards Cantaloupe Island, Watermelon Man, Maiden Voyage, and Chameleon, as well as the hit singles "I Thought It Was You" and "Rockit." His 2007 tribute album River: The Joni Letters won the 2008 Grammy Award for Album of the Year, only the second jazz album to win the award, after Getz/Gilberto in 1965.
Herbie Hancock's 60 years of music and stories need time to tell, and who better than from the man himself? Herbie picked these titles to represent his legendary music career. The podcast features interviews with Herbie himself, along with many of his fellow artists and collaborators, who will guide you through a four-week listening experience. The albums include: Takin' Off (1962), Maiden Voyage (1965), Head Hunters (1973), The V.S.O.P. Quintet: Live Under the Sky (1979), The Piano (1979), Future Shock (1983), 1+1 (1997), and The River (2007).
All eight titles in this VMP Anthology had lacquers cut by Bernie Grundman at Bernie Grundman Mastering in Hollywood. Takin' Off, Maiden Voyage, Head Hunters, The Piano and Future Shock were cut AAA from analog tapes. 1+1, and The River, which were recorded digitally, and Live Under the Sky — which has been resequenced at Herbie's request — come from master digital audio. The albums were plated at RTI, and pressed at GZ Media on black 180-gram vinyl.
Live Under The Sky, the live album from Herbie's supergroup V.S.O.P. — which also featured Ron Carter, Wayne Shorter, Freddie Hubbard and Tony Williams — has been resequenced, and had a new song added to it at Herbie's request exclusively for this Anthology. You'll hear the album like it's never been heard before.
