After the platinum-selling albums LADIES OF THE CANYON (1970) and BLUE (1971), whose artistry and ubiquity would influence generations of songwriters, Joni had grown wary as the media scrutinized her ever more closely. Everything from her choice of style to her romantic partners became the subject of far more gossip columns than were ever devoted to the lifestyles of her male peers.
As a result, she retired, announcing her early retirement from the stage in 1970 and moving to the quiet expanses of the Sunshine Coast in British Columbia. It was a fruitful change of scenery. Inspired by the proximity to nature and refreshed by the peaceful seclusion, she began writing the songs that would become FOR THE ROSES. This time away put Mitchell in a remarkably fertile creative period that produced a series of albums - FOR THE ROSES (1972), COURT AND SPARK (1974), and THE HISSING OF SUMMER LAWNS (1975) - that would simultaneously expand and refine the scope of her music. This era comes to life in the JONI MITCHELL ARCHIVES, VOL. 3: THE ASYLUM YEARS (1972-1975). It's the latest entry in the GRAMMY-winning series that explores the vast, untapped archives of rare Joni recordings - a project guided by Joni's own vision and personal touch. The collection begins with an early recording of "Cold Blue Steel And Sweet Fire," one of two songs (along with "For The Roses") tested during a visit to a Graham Nash-David Crosby recording session at Wally Heider's in Hollywood.
Early demos and alternate versions of FOR THE ROSES, COURT & SPARK, and THE HISSING OF SUMMER LAWNS follow; historic live recordings, including Mitchell's triumphant return to Carnegie Hall in 1972 and a performance with her COURT AND SPARK backing band Tom Scott & the L.A. Express; and tracks from sessions with James Taylor, Graham Nash, and Neil Young.
