Compiled from the BBC archives and Rory Gallagher's own transcriptions and off-air cassette recordings, the box set spans 16 years of his career (1971-1986) and includes highlights such as the 1977 televised and radio concert 'Sight & Sound', Rory's starring performance at the Reading Festival in 1980 and the emotional concert 'At Midnight' live from the Ulster Hall in Belfast in 1984.
A "Best of" from this collection will be available on 2CD and 3LP under the title "The Best of Rory Gallagher at the BBC".
These releases pay tribute to the importance of Rory Gallagher, who was possibly the most recorded musician on the BBC in the 1970s.
"'Tore Down' That was the first song I ever heard.... It's a BBC recording of Rory Gallagher playing at the Paris Theatre in London in July 1972. And I was sitting in the audience, aged 15, and those first few bars were enough to make me realize that this was something I wanted to do again and again.... 'Tore Down' was my introduction to loud, amplified live blues, and by the time Gallagher had finished, my 15-year-old self couldn't contain his excitement. He ran to the front to shake Rory's hand.... When the BBC finally broadcast the concert, I recorded it by leaning the microphone of my clunky cassette recorder against the speaker of our old transistor radio and listening to the tape over and over again..." (Nick Hornby)
