Billy Cobham is one of the greatest jazz fusion drummers of the last few decades, who achieved great renown as a member of the Mahavishnu Orchestra and through his collaboration with Miles Davis as well as his inimitable playing style and impressive live performances.

Only a short time after leaving the Mahavishnu Orchestra, he released his legendary debut album Spectrum, which remains one of the most important and influential jazz albums of all time. Himself influenced by the music of the great Miles Davis, Cobham combines elements of jazz with rock and psychedelia and presents the listener with his true identity in the form of this Spectrum, which ranges from more subtle parts to more aggressive moments.

The included Stratus is the absolute masterpiece of the album, in which funky grooves and effective guitar melodies merge harmoniously and the true soul of jazz is brought to life by Cobham's outstanding drumming skills.

On his aptly titled 1973 solo debut "Spectrum", Billy Cobham showed his interest and aptitude for the genres of rock, jazz and funk. Cobham's impressive list of collaborators includes keyboardist Jan Hammer, guitarist Tommy Bolin, electric bassist Lee Sklar and Ray Barretto on congas. Cobham had just had his success with the Mahavishnu Orchestra when he recorded Spectrum.

The guitar licks of Bolin (Zephyr, James Gang, Deep Purple), who died of an overdose three years later, are particularly memorable, and he harmonizes wonderfully with Cobham's Mahavishnu bandmate Hammer. "Spectrum" reached number one in the jazz charts worldwide and became a crossover phenomenon, exerting a major influence on the burgeoning funk/jazz and fusion movements.
