Mountain, founded in 1969 in Long Island, New York, were one of the most influential American rock bands of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Their musical style combined blues, hard rock and progressive influences and was shaped by virtuoso guitarist Leslie West, producer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Felix Pappalardi, drummer Corky Laing and keyboardist Steve Knight.

Inspired by the legendary British band Cream, West turned to producer Pappalardi (who had already worked with Cream and Jack Bruce) to produce his first solo album. The album "Mountain" was released in July 1969 and featured West with Felix Pappalardi on bass and keyboards and drummer N.D. Smart. A band was put together to promote the album, which included Steve Knight on keyboards.

Under the name Mountain, the band performed at the Woodstock Festival in 1969 and caused a sensation. Shortly after this performance, Smart was replaced by Corky Laing and Mountain began recording their first studio album. "Climbing!" was released in 1970 and the album "Nantucket Sleighride", which was released in January 1971, was even more sophisticated and bore the infamous title. Later that year, "Flowers Of Evil" continued the success and included studio material as well as live recordings. in 1972, Mountain took a break as West and Laing joined forces with Jack Bruce to form a new trio. The live album "The Road Goes Ever On" was released and contained two tracks from the band's Woodstock performance as well as further live recordings from New York and London in late 1971 and early 1972. Mountain reformed in 1973 with Robert Mann on keyboards and Allan Schwartzberg on drums. This line-up toured Japan and recorded the great live album "Twin Peaks" in August 1973. Mountain's last studio album of the 70s was "Avalanche", on which Laing returned to the band before it disbanded at the end of 1974.
