The self-titled solo debut from CSNY's most musically adventurous member is a tour de force of bluesy rock, Latin grooves and pure, unfiltered Stephen Stills energy. His songs can certainly compete with those of the other members, and Stills' own personality shines through, especially on his solo albums.

Stills' top 20 hit "Love the One You're With" was the first single from the album, which was released in November 1970. The album's other hit, "Sit Yourself Down," the second single, reached the Top 40 and landed at No. 37. Stills isn't just playing guitar here - he's wrestling it into submission, layering his virtuosity over an album that sounds both meticulously crafted and effortlessly cool.

Oh, and did we mention that it features both Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton? Because it does. It's like having both the Beatles and the Stones as your backing band.
Stephen Stills, who recorded the album after the success of CSNY, proves that while Crosby and Nash delved into their harmonies and Young digressed into his own world, Stills was busy creating something bold, relentless and sonically rich.

Stills jumps back and forth between folk, blues, Latin and orchestral ballads, but it never feels disjointed. The production is warm and immersive, with Stills playing most of the instruments himself (because of course he does). If Déjà Vu was a collaborative masterpiece, then Stephen Stills is proof that he can do just fine on his own.
