Side 2 contains some cool original tunes, typically spirited and driving and will appeal to Blakey’s many fans. The “Drum Suite” on Side 1 is a real find. Notes (but no arrangement or sheet music) were given to each of the musicians (drummers Blakey and “Philly” Joe Jones, percussionists Charles Wright, Candido and Sabu, pianist Ray Bryant and bassist Oscar Pettiford) and a run-through was recorded. That was it. The chanting was added later, but the transfixing music was brilliantly captured in the moment. A mesmerizing mono jazz LP that still stands up today.
